Chiara and Jessica are two teachers at the San Lazzaro school in Piacenza, with which our organization has a special relationship. For several years, the students at their school have been engaged in letter exchanges with those at the Great Valley School, located in a slum in Kampala. The two teachers expressed a desire to see with their own eyes everything that the Ugandan students had been sharing, and they decided to go. In June 2024, they set off to visit Uganda, our locations, and our projects. During the mass held to commemorate the 30th anniversary of Don Vittorio's passing, Chiara gifted us with this written testimony for the occasion.
I never had the chance to meet Don Vittorio in person, but this summer I had the wonderful opportunity to go to Uganda and see Don Vittorio every day.
I saw Don Vittorio in the smiles of the children who have the chance to go to school every day and change their lives.
I saw Don Vittorio in the diligent hands of the young people learning a trade through training courses.
I saw Don Vittorio in the water that springs from wells in the middle of nowhere, bringing life to entire villages.
I saw Don Vittorio in the hearts of the people who welcomed, cared for, respected, and listened to me.
I saw Don Vittorio in the legs of the young people who play, study, joke, and learn to respect each other at the youth center.
I saw Don Vittorio in the prayers at the cathedral in Moroto on Sunday mornings.
I saw Don Vittorio in the gifts I received, in the charity of young people and women who did not forget me.
I saw Don Vittorio in the light of the communities he helps, in the sturdy seedlings that continue to grow even after 30 years, and in his constant presence, no matter where one tries to look.
