The Experience of Two Young Agronomists at the Training Centre in Alito

Between July 24 and August 15, Elena and Luigi, two young agronomists from the province of Benevento, spent a service period at the Training Centre in Alito, Uganda. Here, Africa Mission Cooperation and Development runs an agribusiness school alongside a farm.

Arrival and First Impressions
Alito is a small village located seven hours from Kampala, rich in biodiversity. Upon arrival, Elena and Luigi quickly understood the significance of their experience through the stories shared by those who had lived there before.

Challenges and Collaborations
They immediately got to work, addressing an outbreak of infectious Coryza in the poultry house. Working alongside local staff, they realized that their technical skills were only part of the equation; engaging and sharing knowledge with local workers was crucial.

Agricultural Production
They discussed agricultural practices on the 240 acres of cultivated land and met Gracious, a university-trained local girl who impressed them with her dedication and professionalism.

Vocational School
The Training Centre also hosts a vocational agriculture school, where they had the chance to both teach and learn from the students. The "learning by doing" approach was prevalent, with demonstration gardens managed by the students.

Final Reflections
The 17 days spent in Alito left a deep impact on Elena and Luigi, who felt more like witnesses than teachers. They concluded their time there hungry for knowledge and acutely aware of the importance of what they had learned.
