Daniele and Camilla, a life choice!

Daniele and Camilla, a life choice!

Daniele Cervellera and Camilla Marion are two of our collaborators in Uganda. They started their journey with our Movement in 2015 when Daniele chose to experience the Civil Service, accompanied by Camilla as a volunteer. The following year the roles were reversed, Camilla became a White Helmet and Daniele our collaborator. Today they are husband and wife and live in Moroto ... a bizarre choice? Perhaps, but they are certainly brave and full of life!

Read their story below!

"What is a young couple doing in a remote place in Africa? Are they the usual dreamers who want to change the world, even with a hint of presumption? Or are they the nth cooperants who risk being kidnapped?
So many questions could arise looking at our experience, and many others that we don't even imagine will be asked
It is not easy to tell what one feel inside, because very often you just live it, perhaps even with a little carefree (an element that distinguishes young people).
Our life here is beautiful and we like it, that's why we have been in Karamoja for over two years. And we feel that we are here not for ourselves, but for someone else. Sometimes we happened to think that we could be somewhere, in Italy, and do any other work, and instead we are here. Is it seriously what we want and that makes us feel good? And we answered yes.
Here we are not heroes, as some can romantically think. We feel that what we do for others is no different from what someone else does in Italy when it works for the good of others or of the society in which they live. Of course, here is not the same context, there are not the same "comforts" that we have in our lucky country, but we absolutely do not suffer from it. And that's why we're still here, to be of service.
Another element that beautifies our daily life is that we begin to understand reality a little, have more mature and deep points of reference and relationships with local people too. And this does not mean having understood everything or "having sat down". There is still so much to discover and experience, so many experiences to do and people to know. And the fact of being here for a while, and not arriving and leaving in a hit-and-run way, is something that people appreciate. And I'm not just talking about us who have been here for some years, but of the organization itself.
Here we live in a context that allows us to move with precautions, and there are security measures to prevent unpleasant events. The key point for us is that the beautiful aspects of this reality are much more relevant than the possible shortcomings or privations. Because we are not hypocritical in saying that everything is always beautiful, but the difficulties are there as they are in Italy.
The silence of the evening and the loud music of the neighboring village festival. The sunset on the horizon and the plastic on the streets. The scents of nature and the smell of burning garbage. The 360 ° view of what surrounds you and the vision of the flood that comes towards you. The handshakes that do not end and the people who come to the hands. The real taste of juices and the taste of gin in plastic bags. The heat of the day and the cool of the evening. The holes we make up to 100 meters to find the water and the holes of a few meters where the children enter to find gold specks. The pipe system to get the water to the health center away and the system pipe to the source has been disconnected.
This is the reality we live in, with encouraging aspects and others less so, where there is work to be done and where to learn.
Because one of the truest sentences we have heard, according to my (Daniel) humble opinion, is "Karamoja has been far from everything and everyone until disarmament. Now the world is discovering Karamoja, and profound changes are taking place. Culture and habits are changing because the impact with the outside world is very violent. Therefore one of the purposes of our presence is to help the karimojong people not to come out badly, to find their own way in this historical moment".
Here we try to help others, with that spirit of Christian service which is also the spirit of our movement and association.
And we assure anyone who has the will to support Africa Mission - Cooperation and Development, that we will try to be that drop in the sea that can give hope where there is none, comfort to those who need it and always give attention to others".
