Youth Empowerment

Promoting Youth Participation in Socio-Economic Development and Governance in Karamoja sub-region

Youth Empowerment
Project funded by:  DCA (Dan Church Aid), Europe Union

In partnership with: Caritas Kotido

Program duration: January 2020 - December 2022

The project implemented by AMCD and Caritas Kotido, in partnership with DCA, aims to support 2.000 youth and 30 youth organization to contribute to the socio-economical development in their respective Districts of Napak, Nakapiripirit, Moroto, Kotido, Karenga and Kaabong.
AMCD is implementing the project in three Districts: Napak, Nakapiripirit and Moroto; Caritas is operating in the other three: Kotido, Karenga and Kaabong.
The project will foster skills development for young people and thus connect qualified young people to socio-economic opportunities. To achieve this, 50% of the identified youth will be equipped with vocational and entrepreneurial skills to enable them to engage in self-employment, formal or semi-formal, while all 2,000 youth and 30 youth organizations will benefit from life skills training (i.e. communication skills, leadership and negotiation skills), which will strengthen their confidence to participate in decision-making and governance processes.

The project aims to provide youth with both technical skills and life skills. Technical skills will go beyond traditional professional courses to provide new knowledge required by the labor market, whether self-employed, semi-formal or formal. As a complementary intervention, consortium members will step up pressure on both central and local government, local leadership and the private sector to create spaces for youth training, employment and participation. Advocacy will also include the need to review the training curriculum to make it more innovative, holistic and more relevant to the demands of the labor market. The consortium partners will continuously act as an additional voice for young people, amplifying the potential contribution that skilled young people can make to socio-economic development.
