Duration 2011 Completed activity

Aims
Increase accessibility, equity and quality of basic health services through the support of the dispensary.

Activity Description
• Renewal of the plant for the distribution of water and the electrical system of the structure both external and internal to the buildings and a special intervention in the operating room making it workable.
• Monthly integration with the doctor in charge of dispensary management.

Achieved results
• Realized hospital training internship for an Ugandan doctor in Italy at the "Villa Salus" Hospital in Mestre (Italy), Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, for a period of three months.
• Kitwe conducted a one-month evaluation mission of an Italian physician and a nursing nurse to identify the interventions to be carried out at the facility and to organize and train local staff.
• Rehabilitation of the water distribution system in the dispensary;
• A remediation of the electrical system was carried out in all the buildings of the dispensary;
• Provided the dispensary of a cardiotoscope and an echograph, a crib for the patient and a chair for the physician;
• Repair the ambulance car and purchase a grass mower for mowing.

Conclusions
During the monitoring visit in November 2011 several serious problems were encountered.
The local doctor was no longer present at the dispensary. From the information gathered, it seems that he chose to follow (or was destined to) the health care of the Ugandan quotas sent by Uganda to Somalia and South Sudan.
The other serious fact is that neither the cardiotoscope nor the ultrasound delivered to the dispensary have been found, which seems to have been stolen.
The absence of a physician and a strong medical director led to the chaotic and inefficient management of the dispensary, despite the fact that the water and electricity plant arrangements have put the facility in better working conditions.
For these reasons, and in tune with the clarifications required by the local authorities, it was decided to block the project.

Direct Beneficiaries:
10,000 people in the entire hospital structure. The Center covers a basin of 150,000 people (the nearest hospital is Itojo, 40 km away).
