Formation of the local communities for a checked management and sustainable of the water resources.
Project N. 044/P
Location: seven districts of Karamoja region. Kaabong, Kotido, Amutad,
Abim, Napak, Moroto and Nakapiripirit
Duration: January 2015 – October 2017
Funding: Italian Episcopal Conference (CEI)
General Objectives: improve life conditions of Karamoja population.
Specific Objectives: promote local communities training for a controlled and sustainable
management of water infrastructures present on the territory of the seven
districts of Karamoja region within 3 years. In particular, rehabilitation of
300 boreholes and drilling of 60 new ones within 3 years.
Activity description:
1.1 Selection of 70 future
pump mechanics with the participation of religious associations, traditional
heads, district authorities and technicians. The people trained will constitute
associations, which will be provided with rehabilitation kits, tools and spare
parts.
1.2 carrying out of training
courses in water sector for three training of 70 pump mechanics. They will be
trained through a theoretical course taught by two "mobilizers" of Co-Operation
and Development and a practical course by assisting the rehabilitation and
drilling teams.
2.1 identification of 20
boreholes to be drilled close to school structures and new settlements and
identification of the necessary material. In particular 5 boreholes have been
identified close to schools; 2 boreholes next to heath centers; 13 boreholes
for new settlements.
2.2 Provision of 25 kits
containing 32 indispensable items for the maintenance of boreholes, delivered
to the new trained experts.
2.3 Drilling, maintenance
and repair of boreholes in the areas identified by the mechanics supported by experts.
2.4 Conduction of water
analysis tests to verify the drinking standard, with chemical and
bacteriological analysis carried out in Co-operation and Development
Laboratory.
3.1 Organization of
trainings for the constitution and organization of pump mechanics cooperative
organizations. Co-operation and Development has prepared a handbook containing
the necessary steps to start an association, register it at the district and
eventually also at a national level.
3.2 District registration of
formed pump mechanics cooperative associations.
4.1 survey for the identification
of potential resale of spare parts for boreholes.
4.2 Training on management
and commerce and on how to become a business for the selected resale in order
to facilitate their durability.
4.3 Constitution of local sales points for spare parts in the district parishes. The project wants to set up shops selling spare parts and tools for rehabilitation activities. The shops will be opened in facilities owned by the diocese, which will become direct responsible at the end of the project.
5.1 Organization of events
and educational trainings on the proper usage of boreholes and on hygiene.
5.2 Constitution of
boreholes management committees for the maintenance and management capacity of
resources in the community. Co-operation and Development will support 360
committees constituted both in drilled and in rehabilitated areas. Each
committee will receive a specific training by Co-operation and Development
"mobilizers" and will be in charge of
raising awareness in his village on correct usage of the borehole and on
hygiene and health.
5.3 Awareness raising of
students through meetings in schools on a responsible hygiene.
5.4 taking advantage of
radio frequencies "Etoil
of Karamoja - Voice of Karamoja", the project is raising awareness among
communities on a proper usage of boreholes and on the care of personal hygiene.

have been completely conducted in order to verify the drinking degree of
boreholes.
4.1 The identification of
potential resale of spare parts for boreholes have been carried out
4.3 Co-operation and
Development has identified the locations where to build the new sales points

boreholes and on hygiene have been organized. In particular community dialogues
and a quality survey have been made.

committees have been constituted for the maintenance and managing capacity of
resources in the community.
