Water program in Karamoja - wells rehabilitation
Integrated intervention for the technical and sustainable improvement of the system of maintenance and rehabilitation of wells

The intervention has the general objective of improving the living conditions of the population of Karamoja, through the restoration and maintenance of accessible sources of drinking water through the creation of a sustainable well maintenance and rehabilitation system
General objective: to improve the living conditions of the population by increasing access to drinking water.
Specific objectives: to increase of available and operated water sources, formation of water management committees, improvement of hygiene and sanitation at community level (encourage the formation of local communities for a controlled and sustainable management of water infrastructures in nine districts of Karamoja)
Activities:

Rehabilitation of existing
boreholes

Training of village
committees for the management and maintenance of boreholes

Training of pump mechanics
for the maintenance of manual pumps.

Awareness raising campaigns
on personal hygiene in rural communities.

Participation to bimonthly
and quarterly coordination meetings, on regional and district level.

From 1983 to 2002, 700 wells of drinking water were rehabilitated with 1,050,000 beneficiaries reached.
