A veterinary laboratory for the pastoral communities Karamojong

Duration: Biennial 2005 – 2007 renown 2012; renown 2013-2017. Ongoing.


Here follow the general activities of the laboratory:   

• diagnostic activity: diagnostic services for main diseases present in the territory (serological, parasitological and bacteriological tests).

• prognosis and treatment of infections and bovine, sheep and goats pathologies.

• consulting and technical assistance services to breeders and district veterinary authorities on livestock management and productivity matter.

• surveys and epidemiologic studies in collaboration with the district.

• awareness raising and health educational activities to district veterinary authorities and to the population through the employment of opinion leaders and sensitizers.

• Training activity for village veterinary assistants (Community Animal Health Workers).

• provision of medicines, veterinary vaccines and kits for breeders.

• activity of support for Karamoja districts veterinary offices and FAO.

• provision of veterinary and consulting services for the communities in Karamoja.


During 2017, since no projects were carried out in the zootechnical field, the laboratory was involved in the Water sector, analyzing samples from drinking water and water for production.

The analyzes were carried out on a total of 42 new perforated wells, 100 rehabilitated with the Water - CEI funding program and 120 rehabilitated in the project in response to the Niña phenomenon. Water analyzes have been introduced into other structures such as basins and ponds.


At the end of 2016:

Water analysis of perforated / rehabilitated wells

- 69 wells and 40 structures: cisterns for water collection and water basins for agriculture and livestock.

Vaccinations and supportive treatments against: fever (FMD) of cattle, contagious goat pleuropneumonia (CCPP) and PPAR POX disease that affects goats and sheep. In total treated 1,891 cattle, 4,467 goats and sheep in the Nadunget sub-county; 3.905 cattle, 712 goats and sheep in the subcontea of Tapac; 8,195 cattle in the sub-community of Rupa for a total of 19,170 treated cattle. 


Results 2015:

In addition to the above activities and to the ones related to water tests on drilled/rehabilitated boreholes, the laboratory focused its activities in the following projects.


Getaway Center Projects: 88 students trained on animal health management techniques.


Animal vaccination:

• 22183 cattle  vaccinated against FMD ( foot and mouth disease);

• 46874 cattle vaccinated against CBPP (contagious bovine phreneumonia);

• 24462 goats vaccinated against CCPP (contagious caprine phreneumonia);

• 52900 sheep vaccinated against PPR (peste des petit ruminant).

189 diseased head of cattle have been treated and other 24 have been treated against worms.

 Training of 35 paraveterinaries.


2014: results

The laboratory has been involved in theoretical and practical training for paraveterinari for 6 months of children between 15 and 35 years of the project "C & D Training Center". From the end of January to April, 18 young people were trained. From mid-June a second group of young people (made up of 28 participants) was recruited and trained by the end of December.

The veterinary laboratory was also involved in the project "Improvement of the ability to manage risks caused by natural disasters and strengthening the capacities of the communities of Karamoja to cope with them" for the vaccination of livestock, after the occurrence of some outbreaks: vaccinated 161,241 cows against "LSD" and "CBPP" (pleuropneumonia) in the district of Amudat.

2013: results

At the end of August 2013 a document entitled KVL (Karamoja Veterinary Laboratory) was signed with the Ministry of Agriculture (MAAIF) Exit stratey / LDS (Livestock Disease Surveillance) handover which describes a strategy for the development and extension of the veterinary laboratory support of C & D-Africa Mission. This document represents an expansion of the MOU (Memorandum of Understanding) signed with the MAAIF.

The Moroto laboratory dealt with the activities related to the disaster risk reduction project for pastoral communities in Karamoja (Uganda) and northern Pokot (Kenya); in particular, activities related to animal health and related to LDS, including a draft draft compiled by the Ministry of Agriculture, a refresher course on participatory epidemiology and surveillance of livestock diseases at Community level for local government authorities, compiling a technical summary concerning LDS. 2012: results

2011: results

The Moroto laboratory has been involved in the activities related to the disaster risk reduction project for the pastoral communities in Karamoja (Uganda) and northern Pokot (Kenya) through the organization of the training of the District Veterinary Offices, the 10 facilitators and the 10 members of the committees, analysis of livestock blood samples (4,500 tests carried out), organization of meetings with stakeholders on livestock disease surveillance and CMDRR (disaster risk reduction community management) and creation of an information brochure and training manuals on Participated Epidemiology.

The laboratory also supervised and coordinated the "Operation for the life of Pokot communities - Amudat vaccinations" project where 70,233 head of cattle were vaccinated and 12,110 antibiotic and multivitamin doses were administered.

The laboratory hosted in November 2009-February 2010 the presence of a veterinarian graduate intern, Chiara Lolli, of Perugia, who in 2011 discussed a thesis entitled "Study of the relationship between man and animal in relation to the spread of some diseases of livestock in Karamoja, Uganda ".

2010: results

The Moroto laboratory has been involved in the activities related to the disaster risk reduction project for the pastoral communities in Karamoja (Uganda) and northern Pokot (Kenya) through the organization of the training of the District Veterinary Offices and facilitators.

The laboratory was involved in the project to consolidate activities related to water and livestock and to improve the system in response to emergencies due to periodic drought in Karamoja and northern Pokot through analysis of livestock blood samples (4,084 tests carried out ), the training of paraveterinists (35 trained operators), the creation and distribution of monthly bulletins to the district veterinary departments (DVDs) of the seven districts of Karamoja and the realization of a final publication on epidemiological investigations.

2009: results

• As part of the emergency project in response to periodic droughts in the districts of Moroto and Nakapiripirit (program code 007 / E), the laboratory has been involved in the chemical, physiological and bacteriological analysis of water samples. ; the publication of monthly bulletins on the results obtained from this activity; taking samples of animals, cows, goats and sheep from farms in the districts of Moroto and Nakapiripirit; the organization of training for paraveterinari.

• As part of the project to consolidate water and livestock activities and improve the system in response to emergencies due to the periodic drought in Karamoja and northern Pokot, the laboratory has been involved in the analysis of animal samples.

• As part of the training project for 100 paraveterinaries and distribution of agricultural kits and seeds, the laboratory has been involved in the activities related to training courses for paraveterinari.

Total beneficiaries: over 3,000 people (estimate by default)

Indirect beneficiaries are the population of the Karamoja region.


2008: results

• Second year realization of a project developed and funded by C & S for the prevention and control of zoonoses in the District of Moroto.

• As part of the emergency project in response to periodic droughts in the districts of Moroto and Nakapiripirit (program code 007 / E), the laboratory has been involved in the chemical, physiological and bacteriological analysis of water samples. taken from 199 sources; the publication of 3 monthly bulletins on the results obtained from this activity; the collection of 241 samples of animals, cows, goats and sheep from farms in the districts of Moroto and Nakapiripirit; the organization of two training courses for paraveterinari for 35 people (14 participants from the district of Moroto, 21 from that of Nakapiripirit) for the duration of 15 days each. Each participant, at the end of the course, received a veterinary kit and a bicycle to facilitate travel.

• Support activities in the training of the beneficiaries identified in the aviculture project in Lokopo, in collaboration with Unicef.

• Provision of veterinary and consulting services for the Karamoja communities.

Estimated total beneficiaries: over 3,600 people

Indirect beneficiaries are the population of the District of Moroto, Nakapiripirit and Kotido.


CONTROL AND PREVENTION OF ZOONOSIS - subproject

Cod. 010E / P Location: Moroto District - Karamoja

Local Partner: Office of Veterinary Medicine of the District of Moroto; Moroto hospital; Matany hospital; slaughterhouses of Moroto.

Duration: 2007 - biennial

Direct beneficiaries: 600 farmers in the district of Moroto

Achieved results:

- 262 animals tested - 225 (85.8%) of adult cows; 37 (14.2%) of adult oxen from 8 villages of 4 sub-regions of Nadunget, Rupa, Katikekile and Ngoleriet of the Moroto district;

- 62 animals (23.7%) subjected to the brucellosis and tuberculosis test - 4 positive results (6.4%);

- 200 animals (equal to 76.3%) subjected to the brucellosis test - 34 positive results (17%).

Zoonosis project beneficiaries: 600 people


2007: results

• First year realization of a project developed and funded by C & S for the prevention and control of zoonoses in the Moroto District.

• Consultancy services and technical assistance to livestock breeders and district veterinary authorities on livestock management and productivity

• Investigations and epidemiological studies in collaboration with the district

• Sensitization and health education activities aimed at the district veterinary authorities and the population through the use of sensitizers and opinion leaders

• Training activities for village veterinary assistants (Community Animal Health Workers)

• Supply of drugs, vaccines and veterinary kits to breeders

• Support activities for the veterinary offices of the Karamoja Districts and the FAO

• Support activities in the training of the beneficiaries identified in the aviculture project in Lokopo, in collaboration with Unicef.

• Provision of veterinary and consulting services for the Karamoja communities.

To highlight:

• Training of public and private sector veterinarians on measures to fight against the pest of small ruminants (PPR).

• Supply of drugs, vaccines and veterinary kits for 172 pastors.

Estimated total beneficiaries: over 3,600 people.

Indirect beneficiaries: The population of the District of Moroto (237,419 people) and the District of Kotido (157,765 people).

Subproject 2007 - CONTROL AND PREVENTION OF ZOONOSIS

Achieved results:

• 18 village veterinary assistants trained on epidemiology, diagnosis and control of Brucellosis, Tuberculosis and Echinococcosis in the Moroto District.

• 412 bovine samples collected, covering 12 villages in 6 sub-counties of the District of Moroto.

• 20 awareness-raising and information meetings organized.

Beneficiaries: 3,432 people - 572 families (average of 6 people per family).


2006: results

- The search for local herbs for livestock treatments has been supported with encouraging results.

- Sample tests have been carried out by veterinarians working in the district veterinary offices.

- A module was created to monitor the diseases detected by the slaughterhouse with the aim of creating an archive of the livestock conditions in the region to be extended to all slaughterhouses in Karamoja.

In collaboration with WFP in September, 79 beekeepers from Iriiri sub-county were trained on the use of beehives and honey harvesting techniques.

- Veterinarians from other districts have been hosted for advice on their professional activities.

- On 27 November the activity of supplying and selling medicines for livestock and training for their correct use was started: 68 pastors benefited from it.

- Started on 11 October, the consultancy and training activities concerning the prevention and treatment of livestock diseases.


Sub-projects 2006

• Statistical survey on the production of cow's milk

- Collected samples of blood and urine from 60 dairy cows and measured daily milk production.

- Local personal format.

• Ethnoveterinary research

- Tested and established the dose of a local anthelmintic plant, the Ekapangiteng or Albizia anthelmintic used as vermifuge on sheep and goats.

• Vaccination of chickens against the virus called "Newcastle disease"

- 14 people trained;

- 3,776 vaccinated chickens;

- 23 dogs vaccinated (anti-rabies);

- 13 villages covered with vaccinations (and the C & S compound).
