Universal Civil Service

What is Universal Civil Service?

It is rooted in the concept of conscientious objection—a choice made by people who fought for their right to dedicate a year of their life to defend their country through non-violent means, by working in contexts where people's needs and vulnerabilities were most apparent.
For those who choose civil service, the primary focus is personal growth on a human level. The goal of the experience is service, which enhances relational skills, understanding of others and their circumstances, acceptance and appreciation of differences, self-awareness of one’s limits and vulnerabilities, overcoming personal challenges, and finding balance in life and relationships. Professional development (improving knowledge and acquiring specific skills) is important but secondary to the choice of service.

Civil service projects are now organized into "programs" that operate within a common field of action, as established by the Universal Civil Service reform.

Our projects in Uganda fall under the program "Enhancing Small Communities and Rural Development - 2024."

What You Can Do

You can serve as a Casco Bianco (White Helmet) at our Alito site (in the Diocese of Lira), engaging in agricultural education at the agro-livestock school. This involves working with students enrolled in farming and livestock courses and providing follow-up support after the course to help young graduates start small entrepreneurial activities. There are two positions available.

You can also serve at our Moroto site (in the Karamoja region), where you can participate in activities related to water & hygiene (well drilling and rehabilitation, hygiene-awareness campaigns in villages and schools), the agro-livestock sector (agricultural training, veterinary services, and livestock health awareness), or the social-educational sector, supporting vulnerable children reintegrated into their home communities, working with the children and youth at the Don Vittorio Youth Center, and assisting young people in vocational training programs. There are four positions available in total.

Our international opportunities include a community living approach. Read here for a brief overview of the primary risks and challenges present in the country.
