Agriculture and security for the CEI project

The 'Agriculture and Livestock for the Future' project. Building climate resilience for food security in communities in the Karamoja region of Uganda', financed by the CEI with funds of 8 per thousand and implemented in collaboration with the Diocese of Moroto and local authorities, aims to diversify and improve agricultural production and controlled and sustainable livestock, strengthening the skills of 225 young people, 50 groups of 25 Community farmers and veterinarians and 50 para-veterinarians through technical training and practical experimentation, in respect for and protection of the environment.

The objectives of the project
The project includes both agricultural work and well rehabilitation: on the one hand, support is provided to family farming activities through training courses, distribution of seeds and animals, assistance in resource management; On the other hand, existing wells are being rehabilitated and new ones drilled.

Training of young people
In March, the selection of young people for agriculture and animal husbandry courses, which began in April, was successfully launched and completed; teaching activities continued in May and June in the four districts of Moroto, Napak, Nakapiripirit and Amudat. Â Courses for the Nabilatuk district started in August after previous courses were completed.
Of the 178 young people who attended the courses in the spring, 174 passed the DIT examination and graduated successfully. During the technical training, 186 young people were also trained in basic skills in administration, financial management, ICT (information and communication technologies), business and marketing.

CAHWs grow

At the end of April, a training course for community veterinarians (CAHW - Community Animal Health Worker) was held at the Nakichumet learning centre for the district of Napak which involved 7 participants: each received a complete set of work equipment (including clothing such as boots, suits and essential products for the treatment of animals). The programme was conducted by veterinary experts and included theoretical and practical lessons on anatomy, health, disease, prevention, diagnosis and vaccination.
At the end of July, a refresher course was held at the technical institute in Nakapiripirit for 33 paraveterinari from the four districts (Napak, Nalatuk, Amudat, Nakapiripirit): After training each CAHW was equipped with a veterinary starter kit to start up veterinary services for the community.

Distribution of equipment, seeds and animals
In May, seeds and livestock were purchased and distributed to the five districts involved in the project: 17 tons of various cereals, 11,298 tree seedlings of different types, 471 vegetable seedlings and 100 heads for the district of Moroto and Napak, divided between sheep and goats and then distributed in June. All animals were vaccinated before distribution. Local authorities, including district and sub-county veterinary representatives, were involved in the distribution activities.
In May, 280 kilos of seeds, 4498 tree seedlings, 46 jars of vegetables and 50 animals were delivered to the district of Moroto, while 380 kilos of seeds, 3000 tree seedlings and 30 jars of vegetables were delivered to the district of Nakapiripirit.

In the districts of Napak and Moroto, 209 tree seedlings and plant seeds were delivered to eight groups of farmers in Napak in June and July, while five drip irrigation systems were distributed to five groups in Moroto. Â In total, 4,628 seeds, plants, animals and materials were delivered.
Five drip irrigation systems were installed in the Napak district, together with a demonstration system at the Nadunget Teaching Centre for students of agricultural courses.

More safety for vulnerable families
The revitalization of the safety nets was achieved through the establishment of 50 groups of farmers in all districts where they were trained on saving and credit techniques (VSLA) Food baskets that will enable farmers to grow crops to improve the living conditions of vulnerable families. Seven wells have also been rehabilitated.

Community support activities continue: if you want to help support the path of young people trained by donating a kit of agricultural tools and seeds, you can do it with a donation. With 120 euros we buy a kit for one student/family.
