DAMS- Improvement of the water collection system and well rehabilitation

DAMS- Improvement of the water collection system and well rehabilitation
Project funded by: FAO (Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations)

In collaboration with: UNICEF

Programme duration: October 2019-October 2020

The north western and north eastern part of Uganda is climatically characterized by long periods of drought, with the consequent difficult finding of water resources for the cultivation of the fields, breeding, the consumption of drinking water. According to recent studies, rainfall has become even more irregular and is below average. Last year the rainy season started two months late and the data show that critical levels have been reached, reaching the record of almost 30 years ago. The proposed intervention has as its general objective the improvement of the living conditions of the population of Karamoja, through the restoration and maintenance of accessible sources of drinking water suitable for human consumption and agricultural use. FAO, together with WFP and UNICEF, examined the situation and issued a measure asking for immediate action to try to reduce the effects of this climate change in Karamoja. The actions to respond to this inconvenience will be aimed at strengthening the sustainable rainwater collection system and the maintenance and rehabilitation of wells. Many sources of water and dams are located on the migratory routes; therefore it will be essential to rehabilitate these places to avoid drought problems during the dry season.

One aspect to keep in mind is that it is not enough to have a well nearby to consider the human right of access to water as satisfied, because accessibility is another determining factor, since waiting before being able to access the water can be considerable.

Refresher courses for well maintenance committees and collaboration with water pump mechanics will be included in the project.

General objective:
facilitate access to clean and safe water for an improvement of the living conditions of the Karimojong population

Specific objective:
the strengthening of the rainwater collection system and the maintenance and rehabilitation of water wells to counteract problems especially during the dry season.

The required actions are the identification and rehabilitation of 14 water collection points and 1 water flow system, refresher courses for well maintenance committees, collaborations and refresher courses with water pump mechanics .
