Actions

-Identification of 70 sites for boreholes drilling

-drilling and installation of 70 boreholes and pump tests

-training for 140 boreholes managing committees (WUCs – water users committees) 

-training for 70 pump mechanics with practical activities (100 small rehabilitations)

-opening of 5 outlets for spare parts selling and business management trainings

-identification of non-working boreholes

-rehabilitation of 35 boreholes

- chlorination of 35 boreholes

-identification and 24 hours pump test in 60 boreholes

-installation of 5 solar pumps

-solar systems management and maintenance training

-training for students in 70 schools on hygiene and proper usage of water

-training for 150 kids and children not attending school on hygiene and proper water usage

-training in 140 sites on hygiene and health

-training for DHOs (District Health Offices) and DWO (District Water Offices) in data collection techniques and water analysis 

-500 water tests and 200 tests on alcoholic drinks produced locally


2012 results

-2 boreholes drilled

-21 boreholes rehabilitated

-3 solar pumps (*) installed in other dispensaries reducing drastically child mortality, for the increased health practices and greater quantity of water available 24/7

-230 water tests

-66 local beer tests

-5 village committees trained

(*) other pumps installed in other primary schools with a project realized in Kotido, financed by Italian Co-operation in Uganda. Droplet irrigation systems directly connected to solar pumps have also been installed in the schools, to allow the new gardens to supply to the children's nutritional deficiency also in the dry season. Not only did they achieved food self-sufficiency, but they sold the excessive production and bought school supplies  with the proceeds. Moreover, a enhanced hygiene has been guaranteed with a resulting reduction of the diseases directly connected.


Beneficiaries: 19.533 people.


Year 2011

Results

-75 boreholes drilled (of which 67 productive and with the building of 40 drinking troughs for livestock where necessary) reaching 52.509 people.

-Rehabilitated 103 non-working boreholes reaching 86.766 people.

-45 pump tests done on existing boreholes for the installation of solar pumps.

-60 new village committees trained.

-65 mechanics trained (coming from 7 districts of Karamoja) for the repair of manual pumps.

- Undertook a work of updating for 70 already existing village committees for the borehole's care

-Raised awareness in 68 schools and 36 communities on hygiene practice, for a total of 29.176 beneficiaries.

-drained latrines in 20 schools, for a total of 14.741 beneficiaries.

-421 water tests and 132 local alcoholic drink tests.

Beneficiaries: 183.192 people (the grand total is the sum of the beneficiaries of the drilled boreholes, of the schools and communities sensitized and of the school where the latrines have been drained).
