F-SURE

Fostering suistainability and resilience for food security in the Karamoja sub-region

F-SURE
Project funded by: FAO, GEF (Global Enviroment Facility), UNDP

In partnership with: WFP (World Food Programme),Uganda Ministry for Agriculture Animal Industry and Fisheries (MAAIF), Moroto District Local Government and the beneficiary communities.

Program duration: 1°September 2020 - 28 february 2022

The F-SURE program seeks to respond to chronic food insecurity affecting the vast majority of people in the Karamoja region (one in two, 45%, live in a situation of food insecurity - Food Security and Nutrition Assessment 2017) due to the combined pressures of drought, environmental degradation and climate change. All this is to be achieved through the promotion of sustainable food production systems for the environment and beneficial for the communities of the territories.

In this program, C&D intervenes with two distinct projects that have the same common goal: apply the concepts of integrated natural resource management (INRM) and sustainable land management (SLM) to give communities the ability to manage in a sustainable way land and water resources.

1_Disseminate practices of a good integrated use of land through agro-pastoral schools
The first works with the Agro-Pastoral Field Schools (APFS) and Farmer Field Schools (FFS).
These approaches are based on "learning by doing", ie learning through field practice and repetition, adopting improved agricultural practices regarding crops and livestock. This approach has seen an evolution in Karamoja over the years, providing a functional platform for multiple integrated holistic interventions.
The project includes promoting the rehabilitation of degraded arable land, restoring the vegetation of abandoned watershed areas, reforesting and rehabilitating deteriorated access points, developing and promoting community awareness, education and mobilization programs to disseminate integrated good use practices. of the lands.
The activities carried out include the recruitment of the new facilitators of the project, their training and the mobilization and establishment of 63 APFS, some of which already exist where a restoration and strengthening action was necessary.

General objective:
The project seeks to respond to chronic food insecurity among vulnerable families in the Karamoja sub-region by encouraging the use of food production systems that are sustainable for the environment and benefits for the communities of the territory through agro-pastoral schools.

Specific objectives:
- Develop the strengthening of multi-stakeholder platforms that will allow for better planning, including landscape planning;
- Channel investments in resilient and adapted food production systems and value chains using a farmer field school approach adapted to the realities of agro-pastoral communities in Karamoja and their need for increased food and nutrition security;
- Support the development of monitoring and evaluation methodologies and the participatory monitoring of project indicators, global environmental benefits and socio-economic benefits.

2_Provision of small loans for the benefit of organizations rooted in the local community fabric (Community Based Organization)
The second, on the other hand, aims at encouraging the role of small local entities in development cooperation, called CBO (Community Based Organization). By equipping them with the means, knowledge and tools necessary to carry out those initiatives that today only large international organizations are able to carry out, these small businesses will finally be able to grow and become leading development operators.

General objective:
The project seeks to respond to chronic food insecurity among vulnerable families in the Karamoja sub-region by encouraging the use of sustainable food production systems for the environment and benefits for local communities through CBOs.

Specific objectives:
- Implementation of support policies and incentives for the production improvement of crops and livestock, for an increase in the value of the food chain and for an integrated management of natural resources
-Significant increase in areas and agricultural systems subjected to integrated and sustainable management of natural resources.
- Support the development of monitoring and evaluation methodologies and the participatory monitoring of project indicators, global environmental benefits and socio-economic benefits.
